Metal Roofing Panel Prices per Sheet and per Foot

Searching for the price of a 3 by 12 sheet, a 3 by 16, a 3 by 20, or "a 20 ft sheet of metal roofing" gets you a dozen stale numbers. Here is how the pricing actually works, so you can figure any length yourself, plus a starting price and a way to see the exact delivered price for your list.

Your list may be longer, shorter, painted or 29 gauge. Configure your building, verify your phone by text, and see your exact delivered price instantly — one total, good for one week. Delivery: $200 within 120 miles of our yard, $285 beyond, final delivery cost confirmed at order based on location.

Panels are priced by the linear foot

A metal roofing panel is not a stock item in a fixed size like a sheet of plywood. It is a continuous ribbed profile rolled from coil and cut to whatever length you order, in our case anything from a few feet to the longest length a trailer can carry. Because of that, panels are priced by the linear foot, and the price of a sheet is simply:

Panel price = panel length in feet × per-foot rate for that gauge and finish.

The rate per foot depends on three things: the gauge (26 or 29), the finish (Galvalume or painted SMP), and the day's steel price. It does not depend on the length. A 3 by 12 and a 3 by 20 of the same gauge and finish cost the same per foot; the 20 just has more feet.

What "3 ft wide" really means

Our ribbed metal panels are described as 3 ft wide because they give 36 in of net coverage after the overlap rib. The sheet itself is a little wider so one rib laps over the next. When you figure how many panels a roof needs, divide the length of the eave by 3 ft and round up, then add a panel if you want a full rib at the rake. A 40 ft eave takes 14 panels per side; a 60 ft eave takes 20.

Pricing the common searches

We do not print the per-foot rate on this page because it changes with steel pricing. The configurator prices any count, length, gauge and finish and, after a quick text verification, shows your exact delivered total instantly.

What else goes on the invoice

A metal roof cost calculator, with real numbers

The PRC configurator is a metal roof cost calculator that uses current pricing rather than a national average. Put in your panel count, length, gauge and finish; add trim and screws. Configure your building, verify your phone by text, and see your exact delivered price instantly — one total, good for one week. You get the total and a complete materials list. Nothing is paid until you place the order with a 50% deposit, and cut-to-length panels are ordered only after that; sheeting is usually ready within 5 days after the deposit clears.

Panel price questions

How much does one panel of metal roofing cost?

It depends entirely on the length, gauge and finish. A panel is priced as its length in feet times the per-foot rate for that gauge and finish. Enter your own count and length in the configurator for your exact delivered number.

What is the price of a 3 ft by 20 ft metal roofing panel?

Twenty linear feet times the current per-foot rate for your gauge and finish. The configurator shows it instantly after a quick text verification and adds screws and trim if you want them.

How much is a 20 ft sheet of metal roofing?

Same answer: 20 feet times today's per-foot rate. We do not print that rate because it moves with steel pricing; the configurator uses the current figure.

Is 26 or 29 gauge cheaper?

29 gauge is cheaper per foot because it uses less steel. 26 gauge is stiffer and dents less and is what we recommend for barns and shops. The gauge comparison covers the trade-offs.

Shingles vs metal, which is cheaper?

On a house with solid decking, architectural shingles usually cost less up front and metal lasts longer and costs less over its life. On a pole barn or lean-to there is no decking; panels screw directly to purlins, so metal is cheaper and faster than anything that needs a deck. For a house roof, see our roofing page.

Can I return extra panels?

No. Cut-to-length steel is made for your order and is non-returnable. That is why the configurator shows the full count and lengths before anything is ordered.
