26 Gauge vs 29 Gauge Metal Roofing: Which One for a Barn, Shop or Shed

The two gauges look identical on the rack and screw down the same way. The difference is about four thousandths of an inch of steel, and it matters more than it sounds. Here is what each one is, where each belongs, and what we recommend for the buildings we sell.

What the numbers mean

Sheet steel gauge runs backwards: the bigger the number, the thinner the sheet. Nominal thickness for 26 gauge steel is about 0.0179 in; for 29 gauge it is about 0.0142 in. That makes 26 ga roughly 26 percent thicker than 29 ga. Coating and paint add a little to both, and actual thickness varies within a tolerance, but the ratio holds.

Both gauges we sell are exposed-fastener ribbed metal panels with 36 in of net coverage, so a 20 ft roof run takes the same number of panels either way. The ribs, the screw pattern, the trim and the lead time (usually within 5 days after the deposit clears) are the same. You are choosing steel thickness and nothing else.

26 gauge: the barn and shop standard

29 gauge: lighter, cheaper, common on sheds

Finish and warranty: Galvalume vs painted

Gauge is one decision; finish is another, and the two are independent. The panels we sell come as bare Galvalume (an aluminum-zinc coated steel with a 25-year finish warranty from the manufacturer) or painted with an SMP (silicone-modified polyester) coating carrying a 45-year finish warranty from the manufacturer. White is priced in the configurator; other colors are quoted on request. The warranty terms are the manufacturer's, not ours, and cover the finish, not the installation. Ask for the warranty sheet with your order.

Check the gauge on any quote you compare

When a panel price looks surprisingly low, the first thing to check is the gauge. Many retail quotes default to 29 ga because it is the cheaper line; a kit quote that specifies 26 ga is not the same product and should not be compared on price alone. Ask every seller to put the gauge, the finish and the warranty term on the quote in writing. Ours already does: every PRC price lists the panel gauge and finish next to the count and length, so you can line it up against another quote without guessing.

What we recommend

Barns, shops, garages, equipment sheds, anything on 48 in purlin spacing: 26 gauge. The cost difference is modest against the whole kit, and you will not think about the roof again. Small sheds and covers you will never walk on, or budgets where every dollar counts: 29 gauge is a legitimate choice, and it is what most retail shed builders use. If you are on the fence, price both in the configurator; the gap is right there and you can decide with the real number in front of you.

Gauge questions

Is 26 gauge metal roofing worth the extra cost?

For a building you expect to keep for decades and may walk on, yes. For a small shed, often not. The difference per panel is visible in the configurator so you can judge it against your total.

Can I mix gauges on one building?

You can, but we do not recommend it on the same roof plane. The panels will not sit identically and the seam can show. Mixing 26 ga on the roof and 29 ga on walls is common and fine.

Does 29 gauge rust faster?

Not meaningfully. Corrosion resistance comes from the Galvalume coating or the paint system, which is the same on both gauges. The thinner panel simply has less steel behind a scratch if the coating is breached.

Shingles vs metal, which is cheaper?

On a house with decking, architectural shingles are usually cheaper up front and metal lasts longer. On a pole barn or lean-to there is no decking, so panels screw straight to purlins and metal is both cheaper and faster. See how panel pricing works.

What screws and spacing do the panels need?

Kits include washer-head screws by the 250-count bag, sized for purlin attachment. Purlin rows in our kits are never farther apart than 48 in; the panel manufacturer's installation guide, available with your order, gives the fastener pattern.
