Gable extension kits

Gable end extensions: carry your roofline straight out from the gable

A gable extension is a covered roof built off the gable end of a house, mobile home, pole barn or shop. It is framed like a lean-to, except it keeps the two slopes of your existing roof: a carport off a mobile home gable, a covered work area off the end of a barn, or a pole barn extension without touching the barn's trusses.

How a gable extension is built

Example: a carport off a mobile home gable

Covering 20 ft off the end of a 32 ft wide mobile home with a 4/12 roof: each receiver C-channel is half of 32 ft (16 ft) times 1.054, or about 16 ft 10 in, screwed along each slope of the gable. Purlins run 20 ft straight out, so they are 6 in C. At the 20 ft line, two rafters of the same length meet at the peak on a middle post, with a post at each outside corner. Twenty feet is within one purlin reach, so there is a single frame line. Go out 30 ft and the kit adds a second frame line partway out.

Before you order

What do I need to measure?

Four things: the gable width (outside to outside at the eaves), the pitch of the existing roof (for example 3/12 or 4/12), the height at the gable (eave height at the corners where the receivers start), and how far out you want the cover to run. We confirm these before the order because they set every length in the kit.

Can it go on a mobile home or a house?

Yes. The receivers screw to the gable end of a house, mobile home, pole barn or shop. Whether your gable framing can carry the receivers is the owner's call; check with your permit office or an engineer if you are unsure.

How is this different from a lean-to?

A lean-to comes off the long side of a building with a single slope. A gable extension comes off the gable end and keeps both slopes of the existing roof, so it looks like the roof simply continues.

How far out can it go?

One purlin reach is up to 25 ft with 8 in C. Longer runs add another frame line, so the length is open-ended.
